Summer programs - Never a dull moment!

24 Aug 2015
The saying 'Time flies when you’re having a great time' certainly applies to the 2015 YWCA camps - Girlspace and Girlz Unplugged. There was never a dull moment. Although the overall theme of the summer was ‘Mother Nature’ each week came with new adventures and excitement.
GU Summer 2015
Starting off with when a camper walks into the room at the beginning of the day. She immediately starts off by making bracelets, origami, or a craft of her choice for her secret sister. Then at 9:00 is opening circle: a time to catch up on what the girls did the night before and to tell the days plan. At the end of opening circle the girls would each choose an affirmation to set their day on a positive path. Once affirmations are done the day officially begins.
Camp is in session.
From paper maché masks and other crafts inside to team building and other activities outside, the weeks were a blast.

GU Summer welcomes Beth to Huntsville! For the first two weeks the camp was Girlspace Leadership. This camp focused on leadership qualities that every young girl could use. At first they learned about Malala Yousafzai and other inspiring young woman. Then it was their turn to change the world. From a website about GOOSE (Good on One Side Every day) paper to saving endangered animals both locally and nationally. One group of girls even raised $147 when they came back for an afternoon with Girlz Unplugged! Money raised has already been donated to the World Wildlife Foundation to save the endangered leatherback turtles.

Girlz Unplugged was also jam packed. Focused around friendships that will last a lifetime these campers had many times to connect and get to learn about their peers. The girls had a great time doing chalk silhouettes of each other, making gods eyes for their secret sister, and making posters together to help support Beth Ward’s ‘YWalk4Women&Girls’ walk around Muskoka. These are just a few of the many activities that the girls did together.
All together the summer was a whirlwind of arts, crafts, smiles, and fun.
